Elementary Camp: Day 3

Finally back on track with the blog! Today was BUSY, but I'm sure you're used to reading that ;)
Today was very productive all things, and all little mental crises, considered. The campers were really tired cause they actually CAMPED last night - apparently no one slept a wink. The result was a bunch of grumpy campers and some counselors.. and an extended nap hour haha!

Today was a bead animal-centric day. The first group to come in (group 4) continued to work on bead animals.. Some of them chose to draw instead, though. Group 5 did the same activity, as did group 3. Group 6 were working on weaving and the ones that didn't weave either drew pictures or worked on bead animals (Seriously, bead animals saved my sanity today).
MORE Minecraft
Group 1 wanted to gimp, draw, and when I introduced them to Shrinky Dinks they could not get enough of those! I think each kid made two or three before they left.
I don't want to play favorites but I was having the most fun working with group 2, because they were working on their dragon puppets!... so yes, I am playing favorites.
I changed the lesson plan a bit to serve the younger campers better. Instead of wrapping the egg carton pieces in paper I had them wrap the pieces in ribbon and decorate the heads more... which also bought time for me to prepare!
It's just SO CUTE. I can't. I really can't.

those little pink things are ears

mustache.. because.. mustache
The next step was for the girls to go out and find a stick to control the puppet.. the stick has to be as long as their arm and sturdy. Tomorrow they will be putting the finishing touches on the dragons (wings, more decorations, tail, tongue) and then constructing the control apparatus. That's a fancy way of saying the STICK and STRINGS. They are very excited and so am I :)

The last part of my day was planning, yet again, and messing around with my Shrinky Dink stuff. I made my sister a present for her birthday.. .she likes Michael Buble. I gave her the knockoff version in keychain form. I'm a good sister.

Michael BOOBY. I crack myself up.
Tomorrow is going to be FILLED with beads and string and probably more Shrinky Dinks and who knows what else! I am hoping to get the kids done with a chunk of their weaving projects so I don't lose any more needles.. junior high took their fair share from my room!

Oh, just a note, the clean up procedures are working AWESOME. The kids make sure to clean up exactly at the 15 minute mark so they can buy gimp. If your area is not clean, you don't get anything! It's all about teamwork, assigning jobs, and being organized. The kids are responding very well to the clean-up plan because they have that gimp incentive at work. I'm so crafty. Pun. Intended.

Elementary Camp: Day 2

Busy busy busy... that's all I tell people at camp when they ask how I'm doing! I get so busy that I fall behind on blogging and have to make up time the next day... so here we go.

Tuesday was a big day for the campers; they got to decorate their rockets. The only problem was the day groups are all different sizes. Some are fairly large, and others are only a few kids and two counselors. I tried to even the numbers a big by dividing up day groups into teams. I wanted to make sure each kid got a chance to paint part of the rocket... the plan:
Pass out four components of rocket.
Allow 4 colors per table, making 8 colors per day group.
DO NOT pass out brushes, mixing trays, or water until after instructions are given. {those little hands LOVE to grab things off the table before you're done talking.}
Have kids retrieve water and then pass out mixing trays.
Give instructions: each person in the group has to paint at least once! No one person in the daygroup is going to be the Michaelangelo of their rocket. {direct quote}
FINALLY pass out brushes....

these guys painted... something about butter haha

Working hard! they ended up doing some sponge painting on the nose cone to make galaxies and stars.

this rocket design completely transformed before the kids left Rockland

so much detail...

teamwork!

making sure everyone is sharing

time to weave!

This has been my every day reality this week

painting painting painting away

this rocket turned out pretty cool - flames on the bottom and all sorts of decor

finished rockets!
Bead animals from the various groups..
it's a cat! and a.. thing!

this is a fox

this is a mouse - see the ears?

I made a slithery snake :)

the head of a stingray - seriously, these bead kits have random animal choices..

more shots of the rockets

This worked out really well, and the kids did a great job. Also, this activity allowed me to do some organizing and planning for Wednesday's crafts.

notice how I have to use three different schedules to make ONE day plan!?
I have taken to writing out my day plans divided by groups. The day groups rotate randomly so I have to rearrange the lists each DAY. The first hour of crafts had one day group (group 3) decorating their rockets and then they were able to work on bead animals. The second day group (group 6) wanted to work on their weaving projects after they finished painting. Group 1 are a bit older and they spent the time after painting gimping and drawing. Group 5 painted the whole time as did group 2. Group 4 worked on starting bead animals... but most importantly.. ALL GROUPS FINISHED PAINTING THEIR ROCKETS. And everyone had a turn.. and everyone cleaned up. That's all Ms. K wanted at the end of the day... phew.

Elementary Camp: Day 1

I DO NOT APPRECIATE THIS
Talk about a busy day! Elementary Camp is off and running and so are the craft periods! Today I had 6 different day groups of kids. Each group had 12-15 campers and they were alllll different ages. One interesting thing about this particular camp is that it is more than 75% girls. So.... I have that as an advantage during craft time, I suppose!
preparing to spray paint
Little scampers, watching on..
One project that I had to add into my craft schedule was for the campers to work on day group rockets. They were supposed to spray paint four different parts of their rockets and allow them to dry to decorate MORE tomorrow.

So that was activity number 1...

I divided up the groups and numbered them so I can keep track of their projects - let's see how this goes!

Day Group Period 1
Group 1: faith bracelets.
This group is mostly boys and they are very Very social. I have been learning a lot about gaining attention and more importantly KEEPING it from working with each age group. I had a similar experience with the Elementary Mini boys; you had their attention once you got them quiet. However, noise was an issue with most groups today.

Group 2: dragon marionettes
These were a BIG hit with the littlest campers today. I only had them do a few steps because they wanted to watch their counselors spray paint, but they are doing a great job already!

I cut down the egg cartons to the correct size and then the girls had to hot glue the 'eye pieces' on to the top today.

The original plan I found has the eyes sticking out more and glued at an angle, but I thought I should adjust that to make it more little-kid friendly. This was easier for them to understand and the pieces fit onto each other smoothly.
Time to color!
The last step the kids worked on today was to decorate the snout and head of the dragons. Tomorrow we are going to add the googly eyes (YAY) and other head decorations... if we get to that after decorating the rockets.
teacher sample! complete with wings, legs, and pizazz!

Day Group Period 2
Group 3: bead animals
This group had some older kids that wanted a more challenging project. I thought bead animals would be a good choice, and luckily one of the counselors was able to help with his expertise in the bead animal department.
He's been acting as my assistant craft lady - I owe him my sanity some days! I will take some pictures of the bead animals as they take shape :)

Group 4: faith bracelets
This was a group of girls and about 3/4ths of them understood the project haha. Some of them wanted to do a different variation of macrame so they took their string and got to work. Others almost completed the bracelets today and they look really good! My challenge with this group was instructing so many people at once; I had to move from one end of the table to the other to teach!

this is actually one of the boy's bracelets..

 Day Group Period 3
Group 5: drawing/name tags
This group was mostly the boys who did not want to work on the weaving project. They made some really cool graffiti-style name pictures and were making tags for the ends of their beds.

Group 6: weaving
Okay.. so.. if I ever needed to be put in my place, this was the way to do it. Teaching warping to elementary school kids was extremely difficult. After 4 of 5 of them were finished, I was wondering why we weren't just going to do wall hangings instead of pouches?! In fact, I might have some of the kids that didn't finish their looms just do hangings... bleh. I did have a couple of campers who picked up on the pattern for warping right away, though, and then it was Ms. K vs. the clock! Unfortunately, we had to pack up and put everything away before dinner bell... maybe tomorrow we can get everyone back on the same page.

Tomorrow is going to be very.. interesting.. I was told that the kids are to be given the option to decorate their rockets more. So, that basically means I will be pushing my craft plans to Wednesday and having them decorate tomorrow during craft periods. The issue is that the rockets can only be decorated so much, or they are going to be unbalanced and fly funny! I think I will put out paint and brushes and leave it at that.. any other kind of embellishments could throw the rockets off kilter.
This could be a blessing in disguise, though. As much as I wanted to continue with my plans for tomorrow it will be kind of nice to only have ONE media to clean up at the end of each period.
We'll see how it goes.
square knot - over and over and over and over again...
In other news, I taught myself how to gimp! Which sounds awful but really it just means working with plastic lace to make lanyards and bracelets. I only know one stitch but now I can at least build upon that knowledge to practice and become better, right?! These kids are buying me out of house and home with their gimp projects.. maybe we'll do one together at the end of the week IF there is any gimp LEFT!

On that note I am going to sign off. I need to prepare the cabin for the onslaught of paint tomorrow and do a little organizing. Plus I think the other staffers and myself are going to do some leisurely crafting this evening... it's a good way to unwind!

Until next time,
Ms. K
