Another weekend gone, another group of campers arrive! Elementary camp has started, 60+ kids in tow, and it was my job to make name tags with each and every one of them (and their counselors!)
mine is obviously the coolest. |
I wanted to tie into the wilderness around us in Michigamme so I had the kids thread driftwood pieces onto their yarn and name tag. I thought they looked pretty sharp.. and now they won't blow away!
This week is going to be very craft-intensive again but I'm looking forward to it! I don't have anything set in stone yet concerning craft plans, but I do know the day groups are making their own rockets to launch this week! They will be decorating and assembling the rockets in my cabin so I will probably have the counselors do the spray painting tomorrow and work with the kids on the project. Then Tuesday they will be doing more 'fine' detailing on the rockets - like painting their names on the rockets or making stripes or something.
One thing I want to at least get started tomorrow is dragon marionettes! I found an activity that was making dragon hand puppets out of egg cartons but I wanted to take it a step further.. so I adapted it into a puppet project! Here's a link to the dragon marionette! I need to see what size my groups will be tomorrow - I have heard 12-15 kids per day group (meaning rotation group) so I could easily split up the groups into teams and have 6-7 kids work on the dragons. We'll see how it goes! The kids will have access to more decorations after the basic steps are completed... again, I need to plan this out! I kind of just started working on it on a whim and it resulted in this. Should be interesting.
I think I am going to unpack and try to organize the lesson plan for the next few days. I have to work around the rocketry project and figure out how to fit in my projects in each rotation. Good experience for when I have a real classroom, I suppose.
Time to relax before the chaos begins again tomorrow..
Ms. K
